In this exclusive interview we spoke with the legendary MARIANA BO at her debut at Laroc Club in Brasil to talk about her music, her inspirations, and her journey in the music industry

The first Mexican DJ and producer to play on the main stage at Tomorrowland, she currently has over 800,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. She has collaborated with DJs such as Timmy Trumpet, KSHMR, R3hab, among others. Marina Bo has stood out in several national and international festivals as the only DJ that combines electronic music with the violin.

Hi Mariana! Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. The last time we spoke was in mid-2015, the world today is a very different place than it was back then. How do you define your sound?

I think my sound is defined by eras. Usually Mariana Bo is characterized by an energetic sound like hardstyle, psy-trance and techno, but at the moment I'm focusing more on techno, which I fit in well, and I love it. And that's how I see it.

How was the fusion of classical music to electronic music in your career?

Classical music with electronic music was the fusion I've been doing since I was 20 years old. Since I started with the project. I'm a violinist with 7 years of career and what I did was to mix the electric violin with electronic music and people really liked it. I think it was a good decision and that's how Mariana Bo was born.

Coincidence or not, you were voted DJ #34 in our Top 100 DJanes list and in the DJ Mag Top 100 in 2022. Despite the DJ Mag ranking still having few women in its list, you reached a very relevant position. Congratulations! What is the reason for this big jump, according to your point of view?

Thank you to DJane Mag for choosing me, and thank you for your continued support! I believe it's always part of the hard work. I think it's 100% part of your achievements and not all of your successes, so keep working.

You collaborated with Brazilian DJs like Dubdogz and Flakkë who will even play at Laroc today after your set. How was the process for the track 'Drop It'?

“Drop It” is a very special song, as it already has more than 15 million plays on Spotify. And actually, I'll play on set and Flakkë will come up with me. I think Dubdogz, Flakkë, they're all like my brothers, we're Latinos and that unites us, right? The process was something very fast, original, simple and flexible. We actually did it really quickly and people really liked it.

You recently released the track “Hello Techno” on Hardwell's powerhouse Revealed label — tell us a little about it.

"Hello Techno" was one of my last collaborations with the Australian duo Bonka. It's a collaboration and a song with a lot of energy. It's kind of like answering a call saying "Hello Techno" I think everyone does a hand gesture when they hear it and the scenarios work really well for me. I think it's very characteristic for me especially.

What types of music and artists have been inspiring you lately? What musical trends have you noticed?

I think I used my inspiration from Vini Vici, KSHMR, and lately I've been attached to the sounds of Space 92, Hardwell, Maddix. This whole process of new sounds improved my creative process.

Do you have any releases in store for 2023 that you might be teasing or especially excited about?

I'm really excited about the new music that's on the way. By the way, there's a lot of good music out there, and I want to release a new theme every month. I just released "Deep in Your Mind" on the Timmy Trumpet label. It's actually doing really well, it's techno. I will also be releasing some more hardstyle and techno.

What would you say to aspiring DJs who admire you, your sound and your brand?

I am very grateful to be an inspiration to them and I believe that reaching this far is also an inspiration for many people. And that makes me very happy. I am very grateful for all the support.

It's your debut for Brazilian club Laroc, correct? How it feels? Is there anything else you want to say to your fans before we leave?

Yes, it's the first time I play at Laroc. I'm really excited, and I want to send lots of kisses to my fans in Brazil and I hope to come more because it's the first time I'm actually playing in Brazil. I think it's the first of many. Let's hope it's a great show!
